1. Scope

This document outlines the procedure for updating the firmware on a router to enhance security, improve performance, and resolve potential connectivity issues. It applies to consumer and enterprise-grade routers that support firmware updates.

2. Prerequisites

Before proceeding with the firmware update, ensure the following:

  • A computer or mobile device is connected to the router (wired connection recommended).
  • The router’s model number is identified (found on the bottom or back of the device).
  • The router’s administrative login credentials are available.
  • A stable power supply is used to prevent disruptions during the update process.
  • If applicable, a backup of the current router settings is created.

3. Responsibilities

  • IT Administrator / End User: Responsible for initiating and verifying the firmware update process.
  • Network Support Team (if applicable): Assists with troubleshooting in case of update failures.

4. Procedure

4.1 Identifying the Current Firmware Version

  1. Open a web browser and enter the router’s IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Log in using the administrator credentials.
  3. Navigate to the System Information or Firmware Update section.
  4. Note the firmware version displayed.

4.2 Acquiring the Latest Firmware

  1. Navigate to the router manufacturer’s official website.
  2. Enter the router’s model number in the support/download section.
  3. Compare the latest available firmware version with the installed version.
  4. If a newer version is available, download the firmware file to the computer.

4.3 Updating the Firmware

Automatic Update (If Supported)

  1. In the router’s Firmware Update section, check for an Update Firmware button.
  2. If available, select it and follow the on-screen prompts.
  3. Allow the router to download and install the update automatically.

Manual Update

  1. Return to the Firmware Update section in the router’s settings.
  2. Click Upload File and select the downloaded firmware file.
  3. Confirm the update and allow the router to process the installation.
  4. Do not power off or restart the router during the update.

4.4 Post-Update Validation

  1. After the router reboots, log back into the administration panel.
  2. Navigate to System Information and confirm the new firmware version is displayed.
  3. Test network connectivity across multiple devices.
  4. If necessary, restore settings from the backup taken before the update.
